Gifted Education

Gifted education is based on the unique needs of the student, not the student's classification.

Gifted education provides gifted and talented students an educational environment designed specifically for their social, emotional, and academic needs. Gifted students receive instruction that is differentiated in content, process, product, learning environment, and assessment. Students complete higher-level thinking tasks in a variety of ways that enhance individual learning styles. Assignments are open-ended, and many options are given for learning. Students participate in the creation of unit topics that they study. STEAM projects and research projects are used to enhance students' knowledge and self-sufficiency.

Educational Plan (EP)

Once it is determined that a student is eligible to receive services, the Educational Plan (EP) Team will meet to determine the appropriate educational program to meet the student's individual needs.

The EP Team is responsible for ensuring a meaningful connection between identification and the services provided so the student continues to make educational gains.

Gifted Service Delivery Models

Students identified as gifted receive services through a variety of instructional models based on grade level and individual educational needs.

Elementary School 

Pull out: meet with intellectual peers to work on critical thinking and problem-solving skills, to address community problems or to work on challenging programs outside of the general education classroom.  
  • Focus on the EP of the student

  • Content and pacing are differentiated to the degree that activities are clearly intended for students evidencing a need beyond the general curriculum.

 

Minimum of 3 hours weekly
Middle School

Advanced Content Class: students receive gifted services for one period a day and consult services when needed for the other six periods. Students meet with their intellectual peers to work on critical thinking and problem-solving skills, to address community problems, or to work on challenging programs.

1 class period a day 
High School

Consultation (no course code): A teacher of the gifted meets regularly with students and/or teachers to plan, implement, and monitor instructional alternatives designed to ensure that the student who is gifted achieves successful accomplishment of gifted goals in Advanced Placement, Honors, International Baccalaureate or other academically rigorous program
  • A teacher of the gifted monitors the student’s progress to ensure the student achieves successful accomplishment of the gifted goals in the general education setting, dual enrollment, AP or virtual coursework.
  • The consultation teacher is required to maintain a record of the services as related to the EP goals.

Consultation occurs at least once a month or more frequently as determined by the EP team for the needs of the student.
