Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten Education Program

(VPK)

The Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) legislation was signed into law on January 2, 2005. This law created a program to prepare every four-year-old in Florida for kindergarten and built a strong foundation for their continued educational success. The VPK program provides each child the opportunity to perform better in school and throughout life with quality programs that include high literacy standards, accountability, appropriate curricula, substantial instruction periods, manageable class sizes and qualified instructors.

A parent may select the VPK program option that meets their needs:

• School Year - 540 instructional hours OR

• Summer Program - 300 instructional hours

The VPK programs serves any child who turns four on or before September 1st that resides in the state of Florida. (availiblity varies in different vpk sites) VPK is an entitlement program that is free for every four year old eligible for kindergarten the following year.

The Hendry County School District has seven school year sites located on the campuses of Central Elementary School, Westside Elementary School, Eastside Elementary School, Montura Early Learning Center, Upthegrove Elementary School, Labelle Elementary School, and Country Oaks Elementary School. There are two summer program sites located on the campuses of Central Elementary School and Upthegrove Elementary School.

Registration Process

VPK Registration: Is conducted via lottery process. Please stop by one of our Federal Programs Offices located in Labelle (111 Curry St) or Clewiston (475 E Osceola St), to pick up a lottery packet. Upon returning packet to one of our locations we will need a copy of your child's Birth Certificate, a filled out Lottery Entry Form (comes inside your packet) and your child's Certificate of Eligibility (which you apply for online)
